Watchaug Pond

Watchaug Pond is a large freshwater pond in Charlestown, Rhode Island, and the centerpiece of Burlingame State Park. RI DEM calls it one of the largest freshwater ponds in the state. You can swim at the free picnic area beach, launch a boat at the state ramp on Sanctuary Road, fish for stocked trout with a freshwater licence, or walk the nearly 8-mile Gormley Trail around it.

Where the Pond Is

Watchaug Pond lies just north of Route 1 in Charlestown. Burlingame State Park wraps around it: the campground sits along one side, and the day-use picnic area is on another, reached from Prosser Trail and Sanctuary Road. To the south, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge has a trail that reaches the shore. USFWS describes Watchaug as "part glacial lake, part Kettle Pond," a reminder that the ice sheet that shaped this coast left the pond behind.

Swimming

There are two beaches on Watchaug Pond inside the park:

The Civilian Conservation Corps made improvements to the beaches of Watchaug Pond in the 1930s, when its 141st Company was based at Burlingame.

Boating, Canoeing and Kayaking

DEM's public boat ramp list includes Watchaug Pond. The ramp is on Sanctuary Road: take Route 1 to the exit for Burlingame State Park and Picnic Area (Prosser Trail), turn left onto Sanctuary Road, and follow it past the picnic area to where it becomes a dirt road. The ramp is on the right. DEM lists it as handicapped accessible, with parking and no horsepower restriction.

The campground has its own boat ramp and canoe rentals for campers. A calm freshwater pond is an easier paddle than the salt ponds and breachways on the coast, though wind can still build waves across open water, so wear a life jacket.

Fishing

DEM lists Watchaug Pond as a designated trout water and stocked it twice in spring 2026, on April 20 and April 28. Anyone 15 or older needs a Rhode Island freshwater fishing licence, and keeping trout needs a trout conservation stamp too. Licence prices and rules are on the fishing page.

Walking Around the Pond

The John Vincent Gormley Trail runs nearly 8 miles around the outside of Watchaug Pond, through Burlingame and the Kimball Wildlife Refuge. It follows bright yellow markers kept up by the Narragansett chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club. In places it follows the road, and part of it crosses the Burlingame Management Area, where hunting is allowed, so wear blaze orange in hunting season. Full route notes are on the hiking page.

Wildlife

DEM's park history says as many as 80 species of birds probably nest at Burlingame, with many more passing through in spring and fall migration. Watchaug Pond has been a notable place to look for wintering bald eagles. Nesting birds DEM lists include wood ducks, broad-winged hawks, great horned owls, hermit thrushes, ovenbirds and scarlet tanagers. Around the water you may see muskrat, mink and river otter, and in spring, spring peepers and green frogs. USFWS says its Watchaug Pond Trail, which runs along the pond and the Kimball sanctuary, is a favourite with birders.

Keeping the Pond Clean

DEM says federal EPA and state funds have paid to study Watchaug Pond's yearly cycle so its water quality can be watched and kept up. Help by packing out trash, keeping pets off the beach in season, and using the campground's dump station rather than letting any wastewater reach the ground.

Nearby

From the pond, the ocean is only a few minutes south. Charlestown Breachway, East Beach and the town's Blue Shutters Beach are the closest saltwater beaches, and Ninigret Park has a small swimming pond of its own.
